Chapter One: The Empty Warehouse

The exhibition begins in a space of potential—an industrial warehouse that is far from empty. Often overlooked and undervalued, these spaces can provide artists with something increasingly rare: accessible, affordable places to work, experiment, and build community. Aging walls, open frameworks, objects, faded grids, and accumulated markings reveal both the history of the space and the artists who have claimed it, while early graffiti gestures suggest acts of marking territory, asserting visibility, and challenging convention.

Near the center is a spool of thread—the first manifestation of Art as a Common Thread—introducing the connective element that will physically and conceptually link each chapter that follows.

This chapter honors the humble spaces where creative communities take root. The warehouse becomes a site of experimentation, production, and gathering—a place where artists transform disregarded space into cultural activity, often laying the foundation for what a creative district may eventually become.
